How do I open, write in, and save my digital PDF workbook?

Modified on Mon, 21 Sep at 7:56 AM

This article is for participants taking Prime For Life in a class with an instructor.

The text areas in the PDF workbook are editable. Your answers are not stored in the browser — to keep them you must download the PDF to your own device and work in it there, saving as you go. Each browser presents the download control differently.

When you click "Open Workbook," the workbook opens as an editable PDF in a new browser tab. To keep your answers you must save the file to your device first (after clicking "Open Workbook," use the save icon in the upper-right corner). Then type your answers directly into the fields and save again to keep your progress.

You can edit it in a browser with a built-in PDF editor (Edge or Chrome — look for the pen/draw tool, then download), or use a PDF editor such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (the free version allows annotations), Foxit, PDF-XChange, or Preview on macOS. The workbook is for your own use as part of the class; you do not need to send a copy back.

If the workbook downloads but opens to a black or blank screen

When the file downloads but opens as a black or blank screen with no text and no way to type in it, the file itself is normally fine -- the viewer you opened it in is not displaying the interactive PDF correctly. This is common with the built-in previewers in phone file apps and cloud storage apps.

  1. Download the file to the device itself rather than opening it from inside a cloud drive preview.
  2. Open the downloaded file in a full PDF reader rather than a built-in preview window. Any of the readers above will display it: Adobe Acrobat Reader (the free version is enough), Foxit, PDF-XChange, or Preview on macOS, and on a computer the built-in PDF editors in Edge and Chrome work as well.
  3. If it still shows a black screen, contact support. Support can check the document that was generated for your seat and deliver the file to you another way, which has resolved this for other participants.

When you contact support, say what device and app you are opening the workbook in, so the right alternative can be sent to you.

Saving the file when the download does not seem to work

  1. From the open PDF tab, use your browser's download button to save the file. Each browser shows this differently -- look for a download icon, or a download item in the menu.
  2. If what you saved opens as a link instead of the workbook, the browser saved the link rather than the file. Go back to the open PDF tab and download from there.

Typing in it afterward

Open the downloaded PDF in a reader that supports form fields. On a computer, use Adobe Acrobat Reader (the free version is enough) or similar. On a phone or tablet, use Adobe Acrobat Reader or Xodo PDF Reader; on an iPhone, use Share > Save to Files and then open it from Files. Type into the text fields, select the checkboxes, and save as you go -- you can rename the file if you like.

If you get an error saying the file or resource cannot be found

That error means the item is pointing at an expired or invalid storage link on PRI's servers, so no amount of browser troubleshooting on your side will fix it. Contact support and say exactly where you hit it -- which module or scene, and what you clicked immediately before the error appeared -- so that the correct link can be fixed.
